ABSTRACT: In the current context, characterized by social and economic inequalities,
economic crises, and environmental crises, the popular and solidarity-based economy (PSE)
emerges as an alternative for sustainable development in Ecuadorian communities, particularly
in rural areas and peri-urban zones. However, it is necessary to delve deeper into its
comprehensive performance across economic, social, and environmental dimensions, as
existing studies have not advanced in this regard, having approached these realities in a partial
manner. In this sense, the research problem lies in the fact that there is little empirical evidence
of the actual scope of the PES in sustainable development, particularly in specific regions, such
as the province of Chimborazo. The objective of the research was to analyze the impact of the
popular and solidarity economy on the sustainable development of Ecuadorian communities,
with a focus on the province of Chimborazo. Regarding methodology, a mixed-methods
approach (qualitative-quantitative) was employed, which included structured surveys, semi-
structured interviews, and a systematic review of recent scientific literature, using a non-
probabilistic sample of organizations in the sector. The results suggest that the EPS has a
significant positive impact, with the social dimension (82%) standing out for its contribution to
community cohesion and inclusion, followed by the economic dimension (75%), which is linked
to job and income generation, although there are limitations regarding access to financing
(55%); as for the environmental dimension (68%) and moderate sustainable practices. It is
concluded that the EPS constitutes an appropriate strategy for sustainable development.
However, the EPS must overcome significant structural limitations, strengthen institutions, and
improve its coordination with public policies and formal markets.
